A Thousand Years of Craftsmanship.

Kamikoto is a Japanese knife maker and brand that pays tribute to the centuries-old craft of knifemaking. Each Kamikoto blade is handcrafted with precise attention and care, employing traditional skills handed down by expert knifemakers throughout the centuries.

To celebrate a thousand years of craftsmanship and the authentic human touches that makes each Kamikoto product unique, Kamikoto worked with House of Forme to launch their first publication as a showcase to their knife offerings and craftsmanship.

House of Forme worked with Kamikoto on the publication design, production management and art direction.

The Concept.

The concept of the publication was created to harmonise with Kamikoto’s rigorous 19 step knife making process. We saw this as an opportunity to design a series of publications that could celebrate the intricate process of their craftsmanship, with the first publication dedicated to step one- The origin of their source.

The Design.

On the cover, a topographic map with 3D embossing on rocky like paper emphasises the mountains of Chiba and Ibaraki, where the Iron ores to make Kamikoto knives are mined. Wrapped with washi paper as the book sleeve, a deeper connection to their Japanese roots were further realised.

Silver foiling and silver pantones were also used to express a connection to their knives. Harmonised with powerful large imageries, this publication truly celebrates Kamikoto’s heritage, process and craft- Carefully composed in one.
